2018 Elections Report

Before the election, Republicans held a 235 - 193 seat advantage in the House of Representatives, with 7 seat vacancies. In the Senate, Republicans had a 51 - 49 seat advantage, which included 2 Independents that caucus with the Democrats.

With one House race still in dispute, the current makeup of the new 116th Congress is as follows: 199 Republicans - 235 Democrats in the House, and 53 Republicans – 45 Democrats and 2 Independents in the Senate. While the Senate will continue with a Republican majority, the House has flipped with the Democrats in control after gaining over 40 seats.

Twenty-three (23) of the thirty-five (35) recipients supported by AACEPAC in the 2018 election cycle won their (re-)election contests; three (3) recipients were not up for election this year. 74% of those candidates supported by AACEPAC in the 2018 election cycle will be members of the new 116th Congress.

Our government representatives can only push for our interests if we continue to communicate our interests to them. Imagine having a patient who does not tell you they are experiencing symptoms, yet expects you to treat them anyway! That is how important communication with your elected officials is. By telling them the challenges you and your patients face in acquiring and maintaining treatment, they can become aware and work toward solving the problem. There can be no effective treatment otherwise.

Now is the time to sign-up as an AACE Key Contact and get an early start establishing and building a relationship with your federally elected representatives. AACE grassroots participation in legislative advocacy is essential and becoming an AACE Key Contact is a simple, yet extremely important, step to ensuring that clinical endocrinologists and their patients have a voice on Capitol Hill. AACE Key Contacts serve as liaisons between AACE and the 435 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the 100 Members of the U.S. Senate.

Whether your Members of Congress are returning to office or have been elected for the first time, you want to be sure to congratulate them and begin the process of introducing yourself and becoming their trusted resource on healthcare issues. The AACE Key Contact Program provides resources and support for AACE members who serve as a Key Contact and are the liaison between their Members of Congress and AACE. The AACE Key Contact Program is the cornerstone of AACE advocacy activities and is not possible without your involvement.

Now is the time to take action! Working together, every AACE member can make a difference.
